TechEd an yearly event for Microsofties will happen in US from June 3 - June 6. Microsoft released few very important products for their eco-system for both developers and IT professionals. So for those who want to grasp heaps of useful information on the new products TechEd is the place to be. This is my simple guide to get your boss to send you to this mega geek carnival. Better, to get your boss to insist that you must go. Here is an assorted list:
- Do Not - Mention that this is the last time Bill G will do a keynote at TechEd. Now if your boss is not a Bill G fan than mentioning this may just absolutely ruin any chance you have. You see the problem is that the moment you mention this to your boss he/she will think hmmm! so you just want to go to a Bill G concert. Why should the company spend money for your entertainment. On the other hand if your boss is a Bill G fan then he may say well! if that’s the case then why don’t I go. So stay away from this one.
- Do - Talk about the failed project sometime ago. What? You do not have a failed project? Are you sure that you are developer? No no we are not talking about the component you wrote in which a bug could not be discovered even after writing a unit test for each character and whitespace in your code. We are talking about the project on which other developers screwed up the whole thing by not concentrating on the big picture and being too distracted by reading posts like this :). Anyhow, what you do is that you subtlety mention how that project would have been a success if you had Visual Studio 2008 last year or whenever and if the team was well informed about the new enhancements. Look angry or frustrated, if boss notices you then appear a little disappointed. Drill the fact that VS2008 is better into your manager’s brain.
- Do - Convey the pain you feel. This one is built upon point 2 above. Point 2 is your entry gate to the whole game.
- Do - Stress on the importance of a good learning experience. Mention how you can learn about the new stuff by browsing through blogs, watching videos etc. and how fulfilling the experience will be if you can get trained by leading experts on the planet.
- Find someone who has been to TechEd and get them to do the talk. It is always best to hear from someone who has first-hand experience.
